The Birmingham International Tattoo at bp pulse LIVE Arena was brought to a halt on Saturday evening as the audience rose in a powerful standing ovation for members of the Ukrainian Army and Navy.
More than 1,000 performers — including marching bands, standard bearers, cadets, dancers and others — stood to attention as the Ukrainian service personnel, from both the Army and Navy, joined the arena for the event’s finale. The Tattoo was unable to continue for several minutes as the audience were relentless in their cheering in support of the Ukrainian contingent who are currently training in the UK, supported by the Ministry of Defence and members of the Australian Defence Force.
The tribute comes as the UK continues its support for Ukraine through Operation Interflex, the British-led multinational programme launched in July 2022 to train and assist the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Supported by international partners including Australia, the operation prepares Ukrainian troops on UK soil before they return to defend their country.
Marking the anniversary of the war in Ukraine, organisers said the moment was an opportunity to reflect on the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people, and to recognise the strength of unity and international support in the face of ongoing conflict.
