NATIONS IN STEP Our 2027 theme

From Norway to the Netherlands, from Bournemouth to Birmingham, every performer who steps out under the lights at the Birmingham International Tattoo trains in the same discipline: precision, timing, and the trust that comes from moving as one. That is what we mean by ‘Nations in Step’.

It's there in the bands - Tveit Union Musikkorps making their first appearance in the West Midlands and Fanfare Korps Nationale Reserve from the Netherlands, marking their 40 year anniversary, and its embedded in the precision of the British Army Band plus the multiple bands making up the National Marching Band. It's also there in our own local pipe bands and Highland Dancers who have spent months rehearsing so that a shared beat feels effortless. And it's there far beyond the marching bands: in the field gun crews, where a fraction of a second out of step can cost the race; in the massed standards, raised and lowered as one; in the dancers whose routines read as a single moving pattern; and even on the flyball course, where a dog and handler must be perfectly in sync at the handover for the run.

Different countries. Different traditions. Different disciplines. And yet, again and again, the same idea: that something extraordinary happens when many become one - in rhythm, in timing, in step.
