Supporting our community
The Birmingham International Tattoo brings people together through music, performance and shared experience. Alongside welcoming international performers, the event provides a valuable platform for youth bands, local dance schools, cadets and community groups to showcase their talents and contribute to a major live production.
Giving young people a stage
The 2027 event will feature the National Marching Band, cadets and dancers from eleven youth dance schools. Taking part gives young musicians and performers the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in a prestigious arena, alongside experienced performers from Britain and overseas.
For these young people, the experience extends well beyond the performance itself. Preparing for the Tattoo encourages teamwork, discipline and commitment, while stepping into the arena can build confidence and create a lasting sense of achievement. Meeting other participants also offers opportunities to exchange ideas, make friendships and discover different musical and cultural traditions.
Celebrating local talent
By including local groups in its programme, the Tattoo recognises the dedication of the teachers, instructors, volunteers and families who help young talent flourish. Their work throughout the year makes these performances possible, and the event provides an opportunity for a wider audience to appreciate their contribution.
Participation can also help raise awareness of the groups involved, introducing audiences to the opportunities that youth music, dance and cadet organisations offer within their own communities.
Honouring the veteran community
The Tattoo’s community connections extend across generations. The Parade of the Massed Standards brings together over 60 standard bearers representing veterans’ associations, including the Royal British Legion.
Their presence provides a proud and moving tribute to service and sacrifice, giving these organisations public recognition and helping audiences connect with the traditions they preserve. Bringing veterans and younger participants together within the same event also creates an important link between generations.
Bringing communities together
From the performers in the arena to the volunteers supporting the event and the families cheering from the audience, the Tattoo is a shared community effort. It offers a place where people of different ages and backgrounds can celebrate talent, recognise service and enjoy an experience together.
Through these opportunities, the Birmingham International Tattoo supports the people and organisations that keep music, dance, service traditions and community participation thriving.
